Jim, this is a wonderful piece and as usual, I agree with your views. Dan Savage believes that if it’s safe to do so, LGBTQ people have an obligation to be out for the very reasons you illustrate in this story. If by being out I give someone a moment of pause to reflect and change their views of gay men (and hopefully by extension all LGBTQ people), then I’ve made an important and positive impact in this world. I truly believe being gay is a gift and as with all valuable gifts, it comes with responsibilities, and I’m extremely proud to shoulder mine.
