Well, Harris, you and I have at least three things in common; we both write on Medium, we’re both gay, and…we’ve both survived GBS.

Unfortunately, I’m part of the 20% who have at least some permanent deficit from it. In my case though, my doctors are pretty sure how I got it, or to be more accurate, what the event was that precipitated the development of the disease.

According to the NIH, about 30% to 40% of cases of GBS are preceded by a recent or ongoing Campolybactor infection.

I wasn’t as terrified as some would be having GBS as I was already heavily sedated and on a ventilator fighting for my life against said Campolybactor induced septic-shock when someone noticed I wasn’t moving very much and had severe weakness in my extremities.

So, it appears I came by my case of GBS in a fairly common way.

I’m really happy you’re part of the 80% though.
